John Barrett is the elected Clerk of Circuit Court/Director of Court Services for Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. In that capacity he provides all administrative, clerical and record keeping functions for 47 judges and 22 court commissioners within the First Judicial District of Wisconsin. Prior to being elected Clerk of Circuit Court for Milwaukee County, Mr. Barrett was an attorney in the Milwaukee County Department of Child Support Enforcement.
Mr. Barrett currently serves on the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access Board which oversees the state court internet site, and is a member of the Circuit Court Automation Program Steering Committee which oversees the direction of computerization for the state courts within Wisconsin. Mr. Barrett served on the Supreme Court Planning & Policy Advisory Committee dealing with court financing issues. He is also a member of the Executive Committee and co-chair of the Legislative Committee of the Wisconsin Clerks of Circuit Court Association; served as a member of the Legislative Council dealing with Guardians ad Litem; and was a member of the Judicial Oversight Initiative Advisory Committee, which deals with domestic violence issues and the courts.
Mr. Barrett received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1994. Mr. Barrett formerly served as chairman of the State Bar of Wisconsin Child Support Attorneys and was a member of the Executive Board of the Association of Milwaukee County Attorneys. He has also been a speaker on child support issues at the State Bar Convention and was a speaker at Advancing the Public Bar - a Leadership Institute II sponsored by the American Bar Association Government/Public Sector Lawyers Division.
Mr. Barrett was elected to his current position in 1998 and has been re-elected in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. He owned a small business prior to attending law school.
