Tip from the Pro:
Improve Your Game? It's in the Bag!
Wouldn't we all like a magical potion or elixir to counter the golf demons that haunt us? Whether you're a fanatic, weekend warrior, or just a hacker, consider the following: Slide rule vs. calculator; Typewriter vs. word processor; Mounted phone vs. cordless or cell. Now ask yourself, is there a 3 iron in my golf bag?
The truth is low irons are dinosaurs being replaced by hybrids and rescue clubs. The PGA's and LPGA's best players have switched, citing more forgiveness and better performance.
The ease of getting the ball high enough in the air to hit and hold the green is probably the most attractive feature of these new clubs. Recently, 20 Wisconsin PGA Section Golf Professionals tested clubs at an equipment seminar. Two pros demonstrated a significant ability to hit with their 3 irons as far and as accurately as with their 4 irons. Keep in mind, all 20 are accomplished ball strikers. If a pro was hitting to the green with a 4 iron from 190 yards, the ball was then moved back to 200 yards and a 3 iron was used. Balls hit with the 3 irons were frequently short and off line, or rolling off the green if they did find the putting surface. Computer analysis showed a definite drop in performance between the two clubs.
Enter the hybrid or rescue with their increased sweet spots. Results were remarkable. Half the players outperformed their 4 irons with accuracy and ability to hold the green. Distance was also remarkably better than with the 3 iron. Even the two players proficient with 3 irons had success with the new clubs. A lot of bags were void of 3 irons and full of rescues and hybrids at our next event!
With a hybrid or rescue, I now feel far more confident standing 200 yards away from the green on a par three. Increased confidence alone will benefit your game. Having a positive frame of mind can never be over rated.
To do your own test, try the demo clubs available at Brown Deer, Currie, Dretzka, Oakwood and Whitnall. Top pro-line names like Callaway, Cobra, Titleist, Ping, and TaylorMade produce rescues and hybrids ranging from $99 to $249. Off brands that are still functional range from $30 to $50. Regardless of brand or cost, the investment will be worth it as your scores get lower and your enjoyment increases. Toss the low irons; lower your scores. It's in the bag.
