Milwaukee County

Letter from Director Sue Black

Happy 100th Birthday to our Milwaukee County Parks! The Milwaukee County Park System was born in 1907, created by a newly formed County Parks Commission. They envisioned an emerald necklace of parkland where residents could be renewed and inspired by nature. Since those early days, millions of park's users have relaxed in our park's regional attractions and played in neighborhood parks close to home.

Today we are stewards to the natural beauty and tranquility in over 15,000 acres of parks and parkways, with six beaches along 16 miles of Lake Michigan's shores. Our parks remain unchallenged as the finest in the nation.

This year exciting activities to celebrate the Parks 100th birthday follow:
  • 100 free outdoor summer music concerts in our parks
  • Select tree plantings complete with the new Park's 100-year logo engraved on memorial plaques
  • A 100-mile mountain bike ride at Crystal Ridge
  • A raffle to win a new Harley Davidson Softail Classic Motorcycle
With you I reflect in gratitude back to the visionary Park's founders like Charles Whitnall, James Estabrook, Alfred Boerner and James Currie, to name only a few, whose sweat and resolve gave us a Parks System rich in tradition, always to cherish and revere. At 100 years our tribute is to look to the past, yet it is even more vital for us to press on and understand how our efforts in another 100 years will be remembered.

"It is not only for us, but for our children and grandchildren who will reap the full benefits." Alfred L. Boerner

Join us in celebrating the Park's 100th anniversary this year.

Sue Black, Parks Director
