The Milwaukee Fire Department Begins Its Quest to Eliminate On-the-Job Injuries

For the last 136 years, the Milwaukee Fire Department has viewed injuries as normal and synonymous to the occupation. When a member was injured, he or she went on injury leave and all other department members were back to ordinary business. Today, the MFD is changing the way on-the-job injuries are viewed, and handled. The department now has a cutting-edge after action to “in the line of duty” injuries called the MFD Significant Injury Plan. Click here to read the full article.

Holiday Safety Tips

A
festive season calls for decorative homes and buildings, inside and out, and feasts for the entire family to enjoy. The holidays are filled with delight, accompanied by delectable foods and fascinating adornments. However, joy can suddenly evaporate during the holiday season when tragedies, such as a fire, occur. The holiday season is also a season for increased fires. Many items used to help celebrate the holidays, such as candles, Christmas trees, and electric lights, are all potential fire hazards.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, fire incidences increase on U.S. holidays—especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. Help eliminate potential holiday fires, injuries, and deaths by following the tips listed below this season.
  • If you place a natural Christmas tree in the home, please keep it watered regularly. The tree
stand should be filled with water at all times.
  • Select a Christmas tree that has a sticky trunk. That means it is more likely to be freshly cut and less likely to start a home fire.
  • Make sure your tree is not near a heating source such as a heat vent, space heater, or fireplace.
  • When you place a natural Christmas tree in the home, it should not be up for any longer than two weeks.
  • If you use an artificial Christmas tree, make sure it is flame retardant.
  • Never put wrapping paper in the fireplace. Wrapping paper is highly flammable and could cause
    a large fire.
  • All holiday decorations should be nonflammable and placed away from heating sources.
  • Never leave holiday lights unattended.
  • You should inspect your holiday lights each season for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear.
  • When cooking, remember to never leave the kitchen unattended, even for a short period. If you leave, turn off the stove.
  • Never use a wet oven mitt to handle hot pots and pans.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop, such as oven mitts, towels, curtains,
    and loose-fitting clothes.

Happy Holidays!

Douglas A. Holton

HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE RAFFLE WINNER

The Foundation for the Milwaukee Fire Education Center fundraising initiative ended September 13 when the 2008 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide Anniversary Edition was raffled off. The MFD Fire Chief Douglas A. Holton drew the winning ticket number 1571.

Congratulations to the winner, Ray Schwanderlik, from Antioch, IL. Schwanderlik purchased the winning ticket at Summerfest 2008.

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this fundraiser a success, including, IAFF Local 215 members, Local 215 Ladies Auxilary, MFD dispatchers, and the family and friends who joined our efforts. This would not had been possible if we all didn’t pull together and sell raffle tickets at various events throughout Spring and Summer 2008.
