Chairman Holloway Announces Safe Alternatives for Youth Allocation

Milwaukee, WI -- Milwaukee County Board Chairman Lee Holloway will announce a $20,000 grant allocation as part of the Safe Alternatives for Youth (SAY) program during a ceremony held at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, School of Continuing Education on Wednesday, June 1, 2005.

An intervention/prevention program, SAY was developed by Chairman Holloway as part of the 2003 Milwaukee County budget process. Milwaukee County allocated $150,000 for a pilot program that provides community-based services to young people living in low-income areas of Milwaukee County who may be exposed to various barriers that could place them at risk in their community. "This is an opportunity for individuals, non-profit organizations, Milwaukee County government, philanthropic organizations and the business community to pool their resources to help our greatest treasure – this community's children," said Holloway. "Real impacts and changes can occur when we work together for a common good."

"Providing safe and fun activities for our youth should and must be a high priority for our community" said Dr. Joan Prince, SAY Oversight Committee Chair. "This model will allow funding for those that work at the impact level with our young people by supporting them in endeavors that are both positive and enriching."

SAY distributes grants of $1,000 or less for one-time educational, cultural, recreational and other activities designed by community members to enhance the life experiences of disadvantaged youth in Milwaukee County. The maximum amount for an individual grant is $1,000, although the average grant is in the $300 - $500 range. The annual maximum is $5,000 per organization.

To receive funding from SAY, applicants can be individuals or groups that partner with a non-profit organization that serves disadvantaged or at risk youth aged 6 – 18 who live in Milwaukee County. Grant funds can be used to support organized activities such as youth participation in sporting events, exposure to cultural attractions, camping and environmental activities, health care prevention activities and educational programs.

At the June 1 Milwaukee Committee Safe Alternates for Youth Recipients Meeting, the SAY Oversight Council will award $20,000 for 32 activities as listed below:
